Hanoverian

Holsteiner

What Pre-Purchase Veterinary Checks Do You Need?

Before committing to any international horse purchase, a thorough pre-purchase examination (PPE) by an independent veterinarian is essential. A standard five-phase PPE includes:

1. Clinical examination: Conformation, heart and lung auscultation, eyes, skin and overall health status.
2. Flexion tests: Evaluation of joints and tendons under pressure.
3. Movement assessment: Evaluation in hand and under saddle in all gaits, on both hard and soft surfaces.
4. Radiographs: X-rays of hocks, stifles, fetlocks, coffin joints and navicular bones — the specific joints examined depend on the horse’s age, price and intended use.
5. Endoscopy (optional): Airway check via scope, particularly relevant for horses with any history of respiratory issues.

For horses to be exported internationally, a blood test for export health clearance is also required. Some buyers additionally commission a drug screen and an ophthalmological examination.
