How to buy the right way

Linda’s philosophy on buying a horse

We’re happy to take time for you. Take the time for your new horse! Especially—but not only—when your budget is limited, your new partner, with whom you want to spend a wonderful time, should be the right match for you. That’s what your new horse wants from you, too. The first trial lessons should therefore not take place only after the purchase.

Still undecided? Maybe you’ll decide to buy a horse later and would first like to rent a horse from the riding school as part of riding lessons or guided rides.

Frequently Asked Questions about Buying a Horse

Answers to the most common questions about trial rides, vet checks, export and your visit to the Heinshof.

Can I do a trial ride before buying a horse at the Heinshof?

Yes. The Heinshof offers trial rides for all horses listed for sale. Prospective buyers can book a stay at the Heinshof and ride the horse multiple times over several days – without time pressure. This allows you to assess the horse properly before making a decision. Contact us at +49 4175 808 4618 or info@heinshof.com to arrange a viewing.

Do you assist international buyers with horse export and transport?

Yes. The Heinshof has experience selling horses to international buyers across Europe and beyond. We assist with export health certificates, passport transfers, coordination of equine transport companies, and all necessary paperwork. Buyers from outside the EU should allow additional time for import permits in their home country.

Is a pre-purchase veterinary examination (PPE) available?

Yes. We strongly encourage and support a pre-purchase veterinary examination for all horses. The Heinshof works with independent equine veterinarians who can conduct X-rays, flexion tests and scoping on site. The buyer bears the cost of the examination. We can recommend experienced equine vets in the Hamburg and Lower Saxony region.

What breeds and disciplines do the horses at the Heinshof specialise in?

The Heinshof specialises in warmblood sport horses for show jumping and dressage, as well as versatile leisure horses. Current breeds include Holsteiner, KWPN, Zangersheide, Belgian Warmblood, Selle Français and Oldenburg. Horses are trained from entry level up to advanced (Klasse S / CSI2* and above). We also offer leisure and all-round horses suitable for amateur riders.

Can I stay at the Heinshof during my horse buying trip?

Yes. The Heinshof offers luxury holiday apartments directly on the estate. Staying on site allows you to spend several days with the horse, ride in different conditions, and experience the full training environment before deciding. This buying trip concept – combining a riding holiday with a horse purchase – is one of the Heinshof's unique strengths.

What additional costs should I budget for beyond the purchase price?

Typically you should budget an additional 5–10% on top of the purchase price. This may include: travel and presentation costs for trial rides (€500–€1,800 depending on distance and intensity), pre-purchase veterinary examination (€300–€1,500 depending on scope), transport to your home country (€500–€4,500 depending on distance), horse passport transfer, and any import duties applicable in your country. The Heinshof usually charges a seller's commission, which is agreed upon by all parties – we represent the horse honestly to both sides.

Who is Linda Naeve-Haht and what is her background?

Linda Naeve-Haht is the co-owner and head rider of the Heinshof. She grew up on the estate and has trained horses to international show jumping level, including competition at CSI2* events. Linda specialises in starting young horses, developing sport horses through the levels, and matching horses to the right rider. Her in-depth knowledge of each horse's character and training history is a key advantage for buyers.

Where is the Heinshof located and how do I get there?

It is approximately 30 minutes south of Hamburg by car and easily reachable from Hamburg Airport (HAM) in under 45 minutes. Address: Im Sahrendorfe 13, 21272 Egestorf.
