Learning to Ride as an Adult: Making the Dream Come True at Heinshof
It is never too late to learn to ride. Many people dream of horses as children and only find their way into the saddle years or even decades later – and that is perfectly fine. At Heinshof in the Lüneburg Heath, just 30–45 minutes south of Hamburg, adult beginners and returning riders are genuinely welcome. Our co-owner Patrick Haht started riding himself at the age of 33, so we know exactly how the first steps feel.
Why learning to ride as an adult is special
Adults learn differently from children: more consciously, with clear goals and often with a healthy respect for the horse. That is an advantage, not a weakness. With the right school horse and an experienced trainer, you build real skill and confidence step by step – at your own pace, without pressure and without comparison to anyone else.
Finding the right riding school for adults
The most important factor is the horse. Look for a stable with calm, well-trained school horses that forgive mistakes, and for trainers who take the time to explain and reassure. At Heinshof we teach in small groups, so every rider gets individual attention, and we choose the horse to match each person – the foundation of a safe, enjoyable start.
Confidence and patience lead to success
Progress in riding comes from trust – in the horse, the trainer and yourself. Our horses are produced and ridden by head trainer Linda Naeve-Haht, kept with year-round pasture and regular osteopathic and veterinary care. A content, reliable horse gives you the calm you need to learn, whether you are a complete beginner or coming back after a long break.
A riding holiday for adults – the perfect start
The most relaxed way to begin is a riding holiday. Stay in one of our eight holiday apartments on the farm, ride every day and immerse yourself completely – in the arena and out on quiet trails through the heath. A few days of focused, unhurried riding often achieve more than months of single weekly lessons.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Learning to Ride as an Adult
Can you really learn to ride as an adult?
Absolutely. You can learn to ride at any age – our co-owner Patrick Haht started at 33 and knows how the adult beginner feels. Late starters are genuinely welcome at Heinshof.
Are the school horses suitable for nervous adult beginners?
Yes. Our well-trained, calm school horses are the foundation of a safe start. They forgive mistakes and give unsure adults the confidence they need – and they are exactly what our guests praise again and again.
Do I need to be especially fit or slim to start?
No. You learn step by step, and balance and fitness come with time. Out of consideration for our horses, there is a weight limit of around 80 kg for riding lessons.
Will I get private or group lessons?
Both are possible. We teach in small groups where everyone is looked after personally, and offer private lessons on request – whatever feels most comfortable for you.
Can I try riding on holiday first?
Yes. On a riding holiday you can ride several days in a row and stay in one of the eight holiday apartments on the farm. It is the ideal, relaxed way in – no commitment, just plenty of time in the saddle.
